Why it matters

Enteric grades appear in this list because fish oil and probiotic products need one, and sugar coating does not, because almost nobody sugar coats a supplement any more. Nutraceutical cores are often larger, softer and more friable than a pharmaceutical tablet, and they carry actives that smell and taste of what they are. That combination puts the emphasis on taste masking, on a film that covers a difficult core colour without a heavy build-up, and on a finish that survives a bottle rather than a blister. Regulatory expectations are set by FSSAI rather than by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Running it

Tell us the core hardness and the friability figure alongside the shade. A grade that runs beautifully on a hard pharmaceutical core can chip an iron or calcium tablet at the same pan speed.
